The Archaeological Museum of Chania

The Exhibition
The permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Chania is structured in three large rooms on the ground floor of the building and one on the first floor. On the ground floor, the narrative directions, through the presentation of representative objects, follow the long journey through time that permeates the prehistoric settlements and the historical cities of the regional unit of Chania, highlighting the social and administrative organization, religion, entertainment, war and trade. They enter at the same time into everyday life, capturing the occupations, the dwellings, the furniture, the utensils, the articles of beauty, to arrive at the ritual customs and the attitude of the people towards death. In order to achieve the above objectives, there are detailed and comprehensible chronologies, maps with the locations of all mentioned toponyms, bilingual (Greek, English) visual and digital media, and of course specific representations, which render important aspects of life during prehistoric and historical times.

Mitsotakis Collection
In the year 2000 the interesting collection of Constantine, Marika and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was donated to the Archaeological Museum of Chania. It occupies three small rooms in the north and in contact with the church of San Francesco. The exhibits are the 1 / 3 of the collection and the presentation follows the chronological order (late 4th millennium BC - 3rd century AD.). It includes findings of Minoan pottery, pottery, stone carving, seals, jewelry and varia (various items from various locations).

The Archaeological Museum of Chania is located in the suburb of Chalepa, the most important historic district of Chania after the Venetian urban core. It is constructed on a plot of land covering 12 acres, with a total area of space measuring approximately 6,000 m2 and with a magnificent view over much of the city, especially the seafront.
